Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey Fans Clash Over Facebook Pics

'Can we just stop all the hate already?' one commenter asks Gokey's online detractors.

It started with some Facebook photos, a dinner at Buca di Beppo, a few unsavory comments and an autographed picture, then quickly escalated into an Internet maelstrom that topped Twitter's Trending Topics list and became one of the most-searched subjects on Google. It's Danny Gokey-gate, and it just won't go away.

On Thursday, MTV News posted an article that attempted to explain the entire issue, and fans of Gokey and Adam Lambert took up the fight from there, inundating our site with comments that touched on some pretty big subjects.

Namely, homophobia and religion, two issues that are at the heart of the whole controversy in the first place. Were the comments Gokey's cousin and her friends left below the Facebook pics homophobic? How about the ones Gokey himself made during a Comcast chat earlier this week (which went, in part, "I accept gay people, but people have to accept my beliefs ... we agree to disagree")? Or were all those things just examples of the Gokeys expressing their religious beliefs, which — last time we checked — they are more than entitled to have?

To be honest, we were sort of blown away by the debate, so much so that we decided to showcase it. Below are some of the best comments, as left by MTV.com users. And if you feel like your voice hasn't been heard yet, feel free to chime in below.

"I saw this trending last night. It seems that a LiveJournal community didn't like the actions of Gokey and his cousin. I can't blame them for that, and the whole stunt that Gokey and his family perpetrated deserved to be exposed. This wasn't the first homophobic blip on Gokey's radar, and it's pretty clear that he and members of his family aren't the most tolerant folks around. It's very disappointing." - LisaNYC

Adam Lambert, Kris Allen Team With Top Hitmakers For Debut Albums

Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, the winner and runner-up of last month's "American Idol" finals, are doing double duty these days: both are rehearsing for this summer's "American Idols Live" tour while working with some of the top pop songwriters and producers on material for their forthcoming debut albums, each of which are due on 19 Recordings in the fall.

"I've been writing a lot with a lot of different people, and it's going well," Allen says. In fact, sources tell Billboard.com that he's been working with some of the top songwriters and producers, including David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry), Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Akon, Leona Lewis). Allen also hit Timbaland's studio in Virginia Beach to work with Joe King of the Fray, whose take on Kanye West's "Heartless" inspired Allen's own performance of the song during the competition. Allen attended the group's show that evening after the writing session.

While Allen has been experimenting with some urban-influenced styles, he's honing the material for the album in a John Mayer/Jason Mraz direction. "Each writing session has been a learning experience," he says. "I think that we are trying to figure it out and that it's going the right way and I'm really excited about it. I can't wait."

Lambert has teamed up with hotshot producer RedOne, the studio wizard who's had a hand in crafting Lady GaGa's worldwide chart-topping hits "Poker Face" and "Love Game," as well as working with Michael Jackson, Usher and the Backstreet Boys. RedOne revealed to the L.A. Times that he hopes to record at least six tracks for Lambert's record (although he wasn't sure if they'd all make the cut).

"I want to go rock -- David Bowie and Queen, but make it more easy for people to get," the producer said of his vision for Lambert. "It has to be rock, but with an interesting dance angle to it, you know? You'll like it.

"You can go almost whatever direction with him. People know him from being on 'American Idol,' singing other people's songs, but you can take him in a new direction, and this will be the first time you hear Adam Lambert with his signature. My goal is to get his signature out from him to the world."

Lambert is also working on songs with David Hodges, the former Evanesence member whose songwriting talents have appeared on a number of "Idol" contestants' albums. Hodges is currently the only writer who has worked with both Lambert and Allen.

Meanwhile, Lambert's recent revelation of the straight boy crush he has on his former "Idol" roommate has left Allen unfazed. "He was so funny," Allen says. "He texted me that day, like, 'I'm so embarrassed.' I'm like, 'No, are you serious? Don't be embarrassed. I think that's hilarious.' My wife, she's so funny. She was like, 'Tell Adam I have a crush on HIM.' "

"He is something different that no one's probably seen before, at least in a long time. But we're two completely different artists as well, so I don't think either one of us have anything to worry about."

Adam Lambert's new (old) single 'Want': Awesome new tune or lame cash-in?

Apparently American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert recorded an album in 2007 and 2008, before anyone had ever heard of him. Now, not shockingly, somebody is trying to cash in with these early recordings. A label called Hi Fi Recordings/Wilshire Records has just released a "single," called "Want," from the sessions, and an album, On With the Show, is due out later this summer.

UPDATE: Lambert has just released a statement responding to the release of this new song:

Adam Lambert has released a statement responding to the release of pre-Idol songs from Hi-Fi Recordings. The songs are songwriter demos he recorded for hire. He can’t be too happy this material is going to be out there ahead of his big post-Idol debut. Kinda sucks for Adam:

“Back in 2005 when I was a struggling artist, I was hired as a studio singer to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. I was broke at the time and this was my chance to make a few bucks, so I jumped at the opportunity to record for my first time in a professional studio. The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on. I’m thrilled to be working with some of today’s hottest songwriters and producers and can’t wait for people to hear what my music really sounds like.”

Here’s a self-serving statement from the CEO of Hi-Fi:

John Hecker, CEO of Hi Fi Recordings, said the tracks were recorded in 2007 and 2008 before Lambert’s rise on the popular Fox singing competition. The album will be titled “On with the Show.”"We were presented with a business opportunity,” said Hecker. “We accepted because Wilshire Records had a long working relationship with Adam, and it resulted in excellent music that they had the rights to. The music has an audience, and it deserves to be heard. I think it’s great music. At the end of the day, from my perspective, we’re really helping Adam.”

Really? Releasing a bunch of half-assed garbage demos ahead of Adam’s all-important debut CD is helping him? I want what Hecker’s on. Or maybe not.

I mean, if even Ryan Seacrest and Perez Hilton assumed the song was a brand-new cut, what’s the rest of the record-buying public going to think?

Producer RedOne on Adam Lambert: “It has to be rock, but with an interesting dance angle”

News broke this morning that Lady Gaga producer, RedOne, spent time recording in the studio with Adam Lambert over the weekend.

Now, the LA Times, speaks exclusively with busy producer, who revealed some details about what we might expect from his work with Adam. Sounds like he’s taking him into a dance/pop direction, but with a heavy rock influence.

“I want to go rock — David Bowie and Queen, but make it more easy for people to get,” the producer said of his vision for Lambert. “It has to be rock, but with an interesting dance angle to it, you know? You’ll like it.”

RedOne said he hopes to record at least six songs with Lambert, but that doesn’t guarantee that they’ll all make Lambert’s RCA debut (a Lambert representative was unable to be reached prior to posting). An “Idol” finalist comes equipped with a built-in fan base, and RedOne said he’s eager to play with people’s expectations.

“You know what I like about him? He’s fresh,” said RedOne. “You can go almost whatever direction with him. People know him from being on ‘American Idol,’ singing other people’s songs, but you can take him in a new direction, and this will be the first time you hear Adam Lambert with his signature. More news is trickling out about Adam Lambert’s upcoming post-Idol release. From E!Online:

Adam Lambert may have just revealed all personally, but he’s apparently putting on a poker face for his professional debut.

Living up to his American Idol reputation, and nickname, Glambert has sought out the musical services of hit-making producer RedOne, the man behind Lady Gaga’s two biggest hits and the person frequently credited—aside from the teacup-loving singer herself—with the recent resurgence of glam rock.

Sources tell E! News that Lambert spent the weekend holed up with the “Poker Face” and “Just Dance” producer in a Los Angeles recording studio.

Not sure I’d call what Lady Gaga does as glam rock, but she’s theatrical, for sure. Labels sources tell E! that Adam’s debut will be heavy on “Queen-inspired” sounds.

I can totally imagine Adam as a male Lady Gaga, with a rock edge.

Swedish-Moroccan producer, RedOne has also produced for Akon, Enrique Iglesias and Michael Jackson, among others. Adam is hoping for “a new sound that goes beyond what he did on Idol.”

"I was like, 'Oh, s---, they put me with the cute guy ... Distracting!" Lambert told the magazine. "He's the one guy that I found attractive in the whole group on the show ... totally my type – except that he has a wife."

Allen's response? "I'm flattered," the Idol winner tells PEOPLE exclusively, "And think it's hilarious."

The duo will have plenty of time to laugh over their missed chance at bromance this summer: Allen, Lambert and the other eight finalists from the show's top ten will hit the road on a 52-date tour starting July 5 in Portland, Ore.

American Idol’s glamtastic runner-up Adam Lambert opens up in the next issue of Rolling Stone, speaking frankly about his sexuality, though he doesn’t think his revelation is particularly shocking.

“I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay,” Lambert says in the new issue of Rolling Stone, hitting newsstands this week. (Click here to check out exclusive video of his cover shoot).

The flamboyant Idol singer hits our cover and bares all, talking about his childhood (”I started to realize I wasn’t like every other boy,” he says), the drug-fueled Burning Man epiphany that led him to AI (”I realized that we all have our own power, and that whatever I wanted to do, I had to make happen,” he tells RS) and his run on the show (”I was like, ‘I’m going to glue rhinestones on my eyelids, bitch!’ “). And yes, he talks about his sexuality. “Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler,’ ” he tells us. “I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit. I need to be able to explain myself in context.

“I’m proud of my sexuality,” Lambert adds. “I embrace it. It’s just another part of me.” Ultimately, however Lambert tells RS contributor Vanessa Grigoriadis that there are other parts of his life that he’s trying to keep front and center. “I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader,” he says.

It was that mission — and his Burning Man “psychedelic experience” — that lead him to Idol after years in musical theater. “I knew that it was my only shot to be taken seriously in the recording industry, because it’s fast and broad,” he tells RS. Adam Lambert is gay.

The American Idol Season 8 runner-up ends any speculation in the next issue of Rolling Stone, out Friday. "I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear I'm gay." He explains: "I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man. I've been at clubs drunk making out with somebody in the corner."

The Idol favorite, who finished in second place after Kris Allen, says, "Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, 'I'm going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler.' " He adds, " I'm proud of my sexuality."

Still, Lambert, 27, says he doesn't mind attention from the opposite sex. "I loved it this season when the girls went crazy for me," he says. "As far as I'm concerned, it's all hot."

But exactly what is his type? When Idol producers put him in a room to share with Allen, Lambert says his first thought was, "They put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He's the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100% straight."

As for the scandal over photos of Lambert in drag that surfaced on the Internet in March, he says, he forgot to remove photos from his profile on a social network for the Burning Man festival in Nevada. "Wasn't ready for that," he tells RS of the photos of him in costume making out with his ex. He was worried that people would think the drag ensemble was typical of him. "I've only dressed in drag three or four times. ... I don't tuck and wear breasts, that's not me."

Though Lambert supports the gay-rights movement, he doesn't want to be its poster boy. "I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader."

Stereotypes about gays do annoy Lambert. "Clay Aiken's gay, and I'm gay, and we couldn't be more different. The only thing that is the same about everyone in the gay community is that we're gay. ... Why can't we talk about a human community?"

In addition to his homosexuality, Lambert shares other personal details with RS.

At 21, he was in a European tour of Hair for six months. That was when he dyed his hair black. In Germany, he started smoking pot and tried Ecstasy. But he does have limits. Among his dislikes: cocaine.

"That drug is such a reflection of the lack of self-esteem and control people have over themselves and their lives," he says.

He's got the dark, mysterious and brooding persona required to play a vampire, so perhaps casting Adam Lambert as one of the blood suckers in "The Twilight Saga" isn't the worst idea I've ever heard. Snagging a role in the tween-tastic franchise seemed to be on the top of Adam's agenda as he got up close and personal with "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke at the Hollywood Life Awards, where he won Young Hollywood Artist of the Year.

Kris Allen Says Adam Lambert, Drake LaBry Are A 'Cool Combination'

While "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert has been content to allow the ongoing speculation over his sexuality to proliferate, his "Idol" cohorts have been directly addressing the issue. Late last month, judge Kara DioGuardi declared that she believed he "was always openly out." Now Kris Allen, the man who bested Lambert in competition, is applauding his friend's personal life.

"I think he's happier that he can be himself and it's nice," Allen told People magazine about Lambert, who has been photographed around Los Angeles recently with interior designer Drake LaBry.

"Adam is who he is and he's not afraid. I support him in whatever he does."

Calling LaBry "a really nice guy," Allen went on to praise the duo as a "cool combination" who are very different yet work well together.

"Drake's from Louisiana and Adam is from L.A.," Allen said. "But they click well and they're really nice together."

Allen, who just signed a deal with 19 Recordings to release his debut album in the late fall, was in L.A. to sing the national anthem at Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Lakers and the Orlando Magic. His audience at the Staples Center on Sunday night included fellow artists Rihanna, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Maroon 5's Adam Levine.

Kris Allen has my vote … for the classiest man of faith on prime-time television.

Oh yeah, he won that Fox TV talent thing last month? Yeah, that one. But the real drama, the storyline that put some reality in “reality” TV for once, was and is his new friendship with the runner-up, Adam Lambert. The understated Mr. Allen probably wasn’t looking to change the world when he auditioned for American Idol – he apparently wasn’t even looking to win, God bless him – but I think he and Adam together will deserve some credit for having altered the cultural landscape. I’m well aware that the lion’s share of press has gone to Adam Lambert, not to mention the stratospheric numbers he’s generated on Google. Yet, if Kris hadn’t played the part he did, Adam’s story would have been quite different. And not nearly so powerful.

Adam Lambert is completely magnetic, and not only because of his astounding voice. He has charisma, he has star power; and he has what many "stars" do not: manners. Grace. Thoughtfulness. And did anyone else mention he's as beautiful as a screen goddess (hair and makeup by The Cure)? Oh, you probably noticed that.
I had never watched an American Idol episode in my life. But one of my Fave Fab Females started sending me cryptic notes and pictures: "You have to see this guy. Click here, and here, and here...And oh, wait ‘til you hear him sing 'Brigadoon!' " 'Scuse me, Brigadoon? Sure, and there's internet footage of Adam in an elegant suit, singing The Prayer at the Yitzhak Rabin Tribute concert; there's him upstaging Val Kilmer in The Ten Commandments; there's some extraordinary clips of him vamping some hard-rock burlesque surrounded by dancers of various sexes and persuasions... the boy is clearly a club creature, openly glam, proudly theatrical, but also well-trained and a serious professional.

Is Adam Lambert A Diva?

Anonymous sources tell gossip columnist, Courtney Hazlett, of MSNBC that during last week’s media tour, Adam was “rude to everyone — from fans right down to the lighting folks.”

Well, some folks who have worked with Adam pre-Idol tell a different story.

Chris Isaacson and Shane Scheel the co-producers of West Hollywood’s famed Upright Cabaret couldn’t have been clearer when I interviewed them in March and April for a couple of New York Post stories I was writing on Adam.

I asked the “diva” question, point blank, and here’s what I got:

From Chris Isaacson:

“He’s incredibly talented, he’s a complete professional, he always knows his music and he’s always on time, and he’s a very nice soul, he’s a good person…you get no diva from him at all, he’s really wonderful.”

And from Shane Scheel:

“He’s passionate about singing, he loves to sing. There are difficult people, and I always try to avoid them…We adore him, he’s one of our All-stars, and we can’t wait to watch him go straight to the top.”

“I think what I like about him is that he’s always been very collaborative and equally supportive of every single person there…He takes a genuine interest in other artists, he learns from them, works with them and collaborates with them. I think that’s a very important part of being an artist.”

All the folks I interviewed who worked with Adam pre-Idol had nothing but glowing praise, not only for his talent, but also his sweet-natured and generous personality.

Unless the Idol experience changed him in some fundamental way? I’m not buying the diva stories.

I take your point, absolutely.

Of course they weren’t going to say anything negative, But, I was struck how down-right effusive all the peeps I interviewed were in their praise.

Having said that, fame can do a number on a person’s head for sure, so it’s true–you never know.

But then, a couple of bad moments does not a diva make.

And lastly. I really have no personal need for the rumors to be untrue. I don’t really care if Adam is nice or not, only that he entertain me. Heh.

Y’all I’m takin’ my heels off, for real, I’m about to cut this MSNBCin’ bitch that wrote the following about the cashmere-lined bag of dander that is Adam Lambert:

While much of the chatter surrounding “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert has to do with speculation about his sexuality, the behind-the-scenes talk at many of the stops along Lambert’s publicity tour is how difficult he is to work with.

“He is such a diva. Rude to everyone — from fans right down to the lighting folks,” said one person who worked with Lambert.

“A-list celebrities have come through here and been infinitely more polite,” said another person who worked with Lambert during a stop in New York.

Lambert should change his attitude quickly, according to one music producer. “No one sells that many records these days to be able to get away with that kind of behavior. To be a success you need literally everyone in your corner.”

OH HALE NAW. Let me say from the hour or so I spent witnessing Lambert on our natural human terrain — as opposed to his natural terrain, the surface of Mars — the above statement is nothing more than a SMEAR CAMPAIGN. In all seriousness, the guy could not have been LESS diva. He rolled with the punches, was friendly to ALL fans, agreed to take photos with everyone (even though the guy had been awake since the asscrack of dawn). He even ate fruit with his hands. His hands.

A self proclaimed reporter for MSNBC named Courtney Hazlett put up a two sentence "article" today quoting unnamed sources stating that Adam Lambert was "a diva," and "rude."
Such a well researched and balanced "article." I say article because the entire thing was about as long as what I've written so far. She gets money for this? Please!! No effort was made, of course, to find anyone who had anything good to say about Adam...like, for example, the other contestants from AI this year who have consistently praised Adam as their "go to guy," for advice on just about everything. Kris Allen says, "I adore him." In fact, I haven't heard one interviewer, contestant, former co-worker, nobody...ever say a bad word about Adam Lambert. So, effectively, MSNBC has come out as about on the same level as The Weekly World News. We make it up, never quote anyone and just throw some mud out there and hope it sticks. Well, great research, Courtney. You should be proud. And I'm sure your family is! I mean, it must have taken you at least five minutes to make that article up and get it posted. Proud of yourself?

Okay, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The daggers have been unsheathed, gallon mugs of Hater-ade are being dispensed, and celebrity parasites looking for fresh blood to feast on are drooling on their keyboards. Glamberts around the world are LIVID, because their beautiful dark-haired chameleon superstar prince from Planet Fierce, otherwise named Adam Lambert, is the unfortunate victim.

It started with one celebrity hack named Courtney Hazlett (previously made famous when she referred to Spike Lee as "uppity"), who unfortunately writes for MSNBC (heretoforth to be referred to as BSNBC). Quoting unnamed "sources", she claims that American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert has been rude to everyone from the fans to the lighting guys, on his recent press junket in New York. The internet being what is, with so many pseudo-journalistic sites that make no pretense of following the basic rules that real journalists learned way back in Journalism 101, that story has been re-gurgitated ad nauseum, sometimes verbatim, sometimes with minor embellishments, but all with zero attempt to track down the truth.

Of course, there's a 0.00001% chance that it's remotely true but that's highly unlikely, dear readers. And here's why:

When performing on American Idol, Lambert was the only one among all the contestants who consistently acknowledged the contributions of the musicians. He didn't have to, no one would have noticed if he didn't, but he did. That is not a diva act, correct me if I'm wrong.

Plus, in this age of ubiquitious video-recorders, from the phone camera-toting public to roving TMZ papparazzi, you cannot find one millisecond of an instance when Lambert was anything but gracious, polite and friendly. And this is despite the fact that the boy has been accosted to an inch of his life. The only times he has shown any indication that he isn't shy of fighting back when attacked were when (a) he nicely invited Clay Aiken to ride his coattails during that "bleeding ears" incident, (b) invited us to listen to Gene Simmons' singing (after Simmons said Lambert doesn't have a "rock" voice), and (c) smilingly said "Wow, these yearbook photographers are intense!" when he was hounded outside a nightclub. Meowrr, the cat sure can claw back and good for him. I do suspect that the last incident may be the seed for this growing hostility, because although the papparazzi know deep inside (and are probably proud of the fact) that they are scum-licking bottom-dwellers, God forbid you call them (gasp) "yearbook photographers".

I watched the live Today show appearance he made with Kris Allen, when cameras where consistently following them around for what seemed like five hours. They had to wake up really early, Lambert was looking slightly puffy from exhaustion, his black nailpolish was picked to shreds from anxiety, but both Lambert and Allen were exceedingly accomodating with the fans. They signed autographs, gave out hugs, posed for photos, shook a large number of eager (possibly germy) hands, gamely sang those damned songs for the umpteenth time - and throughout, they were smiling, slightly overwhelmed, but grateful to be there. AND neither jumped up to choke Kathie Lee Gifford who was at her hyper-annoying best that morning. Restraint at a superhuman level, if you asked me.

There are also countless videos and accounts of Lambert visiting the offices of various New York news outlets and being exceedingly friendly to everyone. Makes you wonder, who exactly are these supposed sources, who (if they exist outside of Hazlett's mind), must have been at one of these places? Did Lambert unknowingly miss shaking someone's extended hand, was someone mishandled by one of the organizers... what happened? Then again, maybe nothing happened. My own "sources" said that Ms. Hazlett (snubbed during the New York junket) and Clay Aiken (still bleeding from the ears) plotted this whole thing while polishing off a bottle of cheap merlot together. But I wouldn't believe me if I were you, because like Ms. Hazlett's sources, mine are all unnamed. And just like Ms. Hazlett, I'm not a real journalist.

In conclusion, if the definition of "diva" is a person who is well-mannered, original, generous, confident, interesting, handsome, gracious, exuberant, and stupendously talented, then yes - Adam Lambert is a diva.

Actually, I'm tired of "Adam Should Have Won" babble, I know most people are so through with it too. Although I really wanted Adam Lambert to win before, I think it's better that he's the runner-up. I am happy for Kris Allen. Anyhow, I just happen to have a lot of things to say on this one.

Gene Simmons in a radio interview yesterday on WLVQ-FM said:

“I thought Adam should have won… There’s no question in my mind Adam Lambert should have won… He has the goods, the look, the vibe… In fact backstage I was talking to Brian May guitarist from Queen and told him bluntly: 'This kid should be your next lead singer.'”

Gene is brilliant at this. He came out and said everything Adam Lambert fans wanted to hear then promoted his reality show Family Jewels. Ignoring of course what was written on his own website a couple of weeks ago about Adam.
So are Adam fans going to watch Gene’s show this Sunday now that he has come forward as a Glambert?

My Thoughts:

He is indeed brilliant for mentioning Adam in his interview. If he didn't I would not care to blog about it.

I simply don't like Gene Simmons and I don't have the slightest interest to watch his show.

If his intent was just to get Adam Lambert fans to support his show, it would have been a wiser choice if he said Kris Allen is the right guy. Doesn't Kris have more fans? He's not promoting a rock concert anyway.

It's a stupid idea to promote your show by luring a certain celebrity's fans. Unless they will be starring in it.

He didn't say anything bad about Adam on his website previously. If he thinks Adam is not a rock singer it doesn't contradict his opinion on who should have won. He knows Adam Lambert is not limited to one genre.

I think Kris won because:

Kris Allen's music appeals to more people.

MOST Danny Gokey fans voted for him. We can't say ALL, some might have stopped voting.

VFTW voted for Kris Allen.

Adam Lambert has so many detractors.

Who could hate Kris Allen?

MANY people just hate gays. Not saying this is the major reason, perhaps a small percentage but let's face it, this issue did partly contribute.

Wicked Adam
We were glued to the finale of American Idol, along with the rest of the country and most of the skating world. As it happens, Drew met runner-up Adam Lambert in Los Angeles last year; Adam and Drew are both friends with retired skater Nicholas LaRoche. We got the whole story from Nick this week.

"I met Adam when he was performing in Wicked with my partner Eric," Nick told us. "He was in the ensemble, and he was also the understudy for Fiyero [the prince]. Eric was also in the ensemble."

Wicked ran at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood for two years, and Nick, Eric and Adam became good friends. In the 2007-08 season, Nick was looking for music for a new exhibition program.

"I heard the song 'I Just Love You' by Five for Fighting on the radio, but didn't necessarily like the arrangement of it," he said. "I teamed up with Adam and the music conductor from Wicked, Brian Perry, who played the piano. We went into a private studio and recorded it. They only did the song three full times; it was amazing. Adam was thrilled when I asked him to record the song and it was so much fun to stand in the recording studio with the headphones on and listen to his wide range. I heard the 'belts and screams' first-hand. It was incredible!"

Nick has performed the program twice, and Adam came to one of the shows to see it. "After seeing the performance, he couldn't thank me enough for giving him the opportunity to do this," said Nick.

So what is the glam rocker like in person?

"He is great -- very humble," said Nick. "I watched him do endless performances here in L.A., all for charities and benefits."

Nick watched every episode of American Idol, of course.

"It was odd to see him without his fun makeup on and the glam look he carries," said Nick. "When he would come out each week and be so conservative, it was weird. I'm used to seeing him in the glam stage like he was in the finale, when he had the crystals around his eyes, extravagant clothing, and belting those high notes that you would never think would come out of his mouth."

Because Nick is in Los Angeles, he couldn't wait until the show aired to find out what happened. He had a cousin on the East Coast text him the final result.

"When my cousin told me Kris has won, my initial reaction was 'I will NEVER watch Idol again!' Then I headed off to the gym," joked Nick. "

I don't know how this whole Idol thing works but I know Adam will be huge, and probably more so now than if he had won. I'm honored to have gotten to not only work with him on this exhibition piece, but to have seen him perform so many times."

Apart from the Idol excitement, Nick is busy coaching at the Toyota Sports Center in L.A., and getting ready to skate in a Los Angeles Ice Theater benefit show on June 12 in Burbank, Calif. Yes, he'll be performing to his exclusive, Adam Lambert version of "I Just Love You."

Nick is also working hard on the new foundation he and his sister Tricia have started, the U.S. Athletic Foundation. They are putting together a skating benefit show, An Evening on Ice, which will take place on September 19 in Ontario, Calif. There is more information on the foundation Web site, and we'll be reporting further about the show this summer. All proceeds from the show will go to the foundation on behalf of Nick and Tricia's mother, Bunny, who was murdered in July 2008.

As an “American Idol” finalist, San Diego’s Adam Lambert is accustomed to performing for Simon, Paula, Kara and Randy. But he probably never faced a panel of opera experts. Until now

SDNN thought it would be fun to have an operatic panel assess everything from Adam’s voice and looks to his charisma. The idea isn’t to be snobby or snarky. Everyone knows he’s talented. And nobody expects the guy to be the next King of the High C’s.
Celebrating the human story through live theatre!

The point is to provide some insights into his appeal and assess whether “American Idol’s” glam prince has what takes to become a superstar.

So meet the judges and find out what they have to say.

Nicolas Reveles, Geisel Director of Education and Outreach at San Diego Opera

Adam’s voice: As an opera professional this is probably going to sound strange, but I love his voice! I imagine he’s a baritone but he masks that with a terrific head voice (falsetto) that is incredibly well trained, fluid and able to communicate emotionally. It’s particularly good in his slower, lyric numbers like “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Mad World”. I also reviewed his performance of “Black and White,” where it seemed to me that at times he was driving the voice a little hard. But one has to accept that with pop and rock singers. His pitch is excellent, even in those crazy “coloratura-like” passages; the only pitch issue I had was with the initial moment of the very last note in “Mad World” but he obviously heard the problem and fixed it on the spot. That was very professional, very self-aware, and it’s something that opera singers often have happen to them as well. So he’s in good company.

His looks: Adam has a distinctive look that makes him stand out from the crowd and this is all to his benefit for a career in pop music. He’s attractive but mysterious and has a kind of “dark” thing going for him that makes audiences want to know more about him. The only thing that I’d caution him on would be that he’s a bit wide in the hips and tends to a bit of pudginess in the face. He’ll have to continually work with hair stylists and wardrobe designers to minimize these features. I foresee what happened to Elvis in his later years if Adam doesn’t carefully watch his physique. But when he wins “American Idol” (that’s “when,” not “if,” as far as I’m concerned), he’ll have plenty of money for a physical trainer!

Charisma: Adam Lambert has the world on a string. He moves with incredible sex appeal but shows us moments of vulnerability and purity as well. The audience obviously loves him, and so does the camera. He knows that and he works it honestly without coming off as a poseur. I feel like he’s serving the song every time he steps up to the mic. He most certainly has that certain something, that rare combination of talent, ability to communicate on many levels, an interior sense of a song, inherent musicianship and cockiness that demands attention from an audience and offers it something new.

Mini-review: I chose “The Tracks of My Tears,” which can be downloaded from iTunes. Adam’s diction in this song is impeccable, something that’s the hallmark of a great singer in any genre (Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald come to mind, but also Renee Fleming and Bryn Terfel). That ability helps him to bend syllables and color certain words, making the communication of the overall song a joy to experience. He seems as if he’s improvising his embellishments (”licks”) on the spot; it doesn’t matter if they’re plotted within an inch of their lives. He makes it seem completely fresh which, after all, is the whole point. The phrasing makes me realize that he knows this song from the inside and is letting us in on the secret of the song, giving us some precious insight that only he might have known before. The register breaks in his falsetto are masterfully covered so that everything sounds seamless and perfectly legato. A wonderful, engaging and touching performance.

Chances of becoming a superstar: High. This guy’s going to become a major star, no question about it. And I’ll tell you a secret: I will probably buy his first solo album. There. I said it.

Leon Natker, General Director of Lyric Opera San Diego

Adam’s voice: Adam is a Broadway-style lyric tenor. He supports his voice well, which is no small achievement in heavy metal rock. He also doesn’t rely on falsetto tricks in the upper register; he’s really singing the notes with his full voice. His diction in Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” is better than the original recording so he definitely is trying to communicate with an audience. He has been on the road with “Wicked” so we know he has the stamina to last eight performances a week. It’s hard to tell from recorded media how big the voice is but it clearly has potential on a microphone. My questions would be: How long can he do this style of singing and is it the best style for his voice and for a long career? He seems to have the voice under control; I think it’s a matter of choices for him. What does Adam want in ten years?

His looks: I know the “Idol” staff styles these kids and I have to wonder what they’re really going for with Adam’s “look.” We all can tell that they’re thinking of him as a Rock Star but are the make-up and the funky hair the best they could do? Appearance in the pop scene is very important; I just don’t see whom this look appeals to.

Charisma: I’m probably the wrong person to ask this. He has a great deal of energy and charisma when he performs. He clearly is comfortable in front of an audience. I just don’t know whom it appeals to. Of course I’m not in the business of selling pop CDs to a very young age demographic.

Mini-review: I watched his performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” His voice was right on pitch and well supported, his diction was excellent and for that type of number I think his phrasing was good. Many rockers breathe at awkward moments because they’re pushing the voice and are out of breath. Adam doesn’t have this issue. I think it’s a good rendition of that heavy metal style of singing.

Chances of becoming a major star: Medium.

Adam’s voice: Impressive. But not easy to categorize. Adam has tenor-like qualities along with some of the darker shadings of a baritone. He can also soar into the stratosphere with a fearless falsetto. Lean, supple and attractive, his voice is versatile enough for a variety of styles. And his attentiveness to pitch, phrasing and breath control indicates he’s combining his musical instincts with a firmly grounded technique. That should prolong his career.

His looks: Dark nail polish and glittery guyliner may not work for everyone, especially someone singing Mozart or Massenet at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. But it works for Adam. If anything, his kind of androgynous chic has expanded his fan base. Combine the shaggy black hair, skin-tight pants and leathery jackets with an unpretentious, nice-guy persona and you get a singer who looks like a bad boy without being scary.

Charisma: Are you kidding? Adam oozes charisma. If he could bottle the stuff, he would make a fortune. That kind of allure can’t be faked. Some of it has to do with confidence, the way a performer takes command of the stage. Legendary opera singers from Caruso to Pavarotti had that ability. Adam has it, too. He seems comfortable with who he is and attuned to his own aesthetic. He almost dares you to watch and see what he can do. And people are watching, by the millions.

Mini-review: I picked “Born to Be Wild,” the Steppenwolf classic that’s often credited with being the first heavy-metal song. What I like about Adam’s version is that it blends wildness and control, passion and sophistication. Much like an opera singer enhances a melodic line with ornamentation, Adam supplies his own virtuosic flair. He bends notes, makes wide leaps, adds elaborate embellishments and pumps up the volume to an ear-tingling fortissimo. It’s all proof of his vocal mastery.

Chances of becoming a major star: Medium to high. The reason I’m hedging is that the pop music world is notoriously fickle. Unlike opera, where singers often perform year after year, even decade after decade, pop music is always hungry for the next big thrill, the newest sensation. Yet one thing appears certain. Adam has loyal fans in San Diego. And they appreciate him for all he has to offer. Rock on, Adam!

Adam Lambert Was Spotted In Medical Building

Taking his newfound fame in stride, Adam Lambert looked in high spirits as he stepped out in Beverly Hills on Friday (June 5).

The “American Idol” runner-up flashed a peace sign to following paparazzi as he visited a local medical building on what was a lovely day.

The 27-year-old American Idol alum may not have been accompanied by interior designer/painter boyfriend Drake LaBry but someone more famous was there — Katharine McPhee’s paparazzi protector Quween.

Meanwhile, People magazine recently dished out a few interesting tidbits about Adam’s boyfriend, interior designer Drake LaBry.

Described as a southern gentleman who loves to travel, an insider reveals, “He’s been Adam’s best friend and totally there with him through this whole [Idol] process.”

Apparently he has a tattoo on his arm and two bird tattoos on his chest.

Here's your Rolling Stone cover, America! While everyone with a voice box has been speculating as to how and when Adam Lambert would announce that he's a gay, Glambert's remained relatively mum on the subject -- with the exception of a couple fire stoking statements.

But, like Allison Krauss sang, "You say it best when you say nothing at all." So Adam continues to live his life -- getting pedicures, going shopping and leaving clubs holding hands with dudes.

Yes, Adam made his tight-panted way out of Guys and Dolls nightclub in LA last night with his digits lovingly placed in rumored boyfriend Drake LaBry's hand. So while I am totally interested in hearing Adam's story (should he choose to tell it), I think we can all agree with Kara DioGuardi on this one: Adam was never really in the closet.

Adam Lambert is My Equality Hero

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the rumors swirling around American Idol contestant Adam Lambert - was he gay or wasn't he? I concluded that of course he was, and who cared anyway. It is all about his music, and I am simply enthralled with his talent.

Since that time, Adam has been incessantly asked by reporters whether he is gay - and he has gracefully avoided making any statement other than that he has nothing to hide. I suppose the media attention is to be expected.

But what I did not expect and what is far worse, in my opinion, is the fact that he has been pressured by some the gay community to make a public statement owning up to his orientation - and harshly criticized for not being their latest controversial poster child. The reason that has irritated me to no end is because I always thought that what gay people wanted was a world in which they could just be themselves without anyone making a big deal out of it. Instead, it has appeared they want to keep the "them and us" battle going on and on.

Meanwhile, Adam has just gone on about his business, refusing to play that game, making amazing music and providing entertaining interviews, and carrying on with his normal, private life.

This morning when I read the headlines about his night out with his boyfriend last night, I was tickled pink. He was pictured walking out of a club hand in hand with his boyfriend, not a hint of shame on his face, just as happy as he could be to see everyone. He did not address the fact that he was out with another man or make any kind of issue of it.

He has very coolly handled this question in such a way that he is not asking anyone to care one way or another about what he does or who he is. He is not trying to be anything or say anything or change anything or call attention to anything. He believes in a world of equality and is acting on that belief by simply being equal. Isn't that exactly what it's all been about?

The story

This season on "American Idol," there's a huge question looming around Adam Lambert.

No, not that one. The one about whether this season would have been as exciting had he not been a part of the show.

Love him or hate him, Lambert has added an element to the competition that has been woefully lacking in seasons past: a contestant so unique that you can't wait to see what he will pull next out of his bag of tricks.

Regardless on how the season concludes, with Lambert being named "American Idol" or losing the title to competitor Kris Allen, it's obvious that a star has been born, and we all got to watch.

"I don't think there would be nearly the interest that there is if it weren't for Adam," said Brian Mansfield, who blogs about the show for USA Today. "Really, all season long it's been Adam and the rest of the field, and is there anybody in the rest of the field that can beat Adam."

Respectfully, I don’t think Adam is a rock singer. He sounds much more convincing singing ballads, and Broadway shows. His voice doesn’t seem to have a “rock quality.” But, I’m sure he’s going to do just fine.

A very nice comment from an Adam Lambert fan on New York Post's Anyone Else Thinking "Idol" Is Rigged?

Surprise! Surprise! The Adam haters (aka some fans of some other contestants) come out like vultures. God knows what their reaction would have been like if he had been eliminated.

I really do wish they would find something more original to say but I understand that it is difficult to do so when there is so little there to realistically criticise.

“Theatrical”
Reality check! Name me a major star of contemporary music since its inception who has not been theatrical. It’s called putting on a performance. From Presley to Morrison to Bowie to Mercury to Bolan to Jackson to Prince to Madonna right up to Justin Timberlake, Mica, the Scissor Sisters, Pink, Lady GaGa.

“He’s Broadway”
You mean he has a powerful voice that can be relied on to give note perfect performance after note perfect performance while conveying and portraying? Wow! What an insult!

“He screeches/shrieks/screams”
The day someone screeches, shrieks or screams in perfect pitch, in tone and with control, I want to know about it. Anyway, where were these in Mad World or Tracks of My Tears?

“It’s all about his performance, not his vocals”, “He is not a recording artist / will not sell records” – Explain please then why his download sales wipe the floor with those of the other contestants. Even the next highest, Kris, trails in his wake. Expain why they are consistently the highest rated, including ratings from people openly fans of other contestants. Explain then why producers are already lining up to work with him and why Simon Cowell has said that “he should be out there selling millions worldwide. He is that good.”, “You don’t go into this show every year hoping to find a star. You expect to find a good winner. You only hope to find a star. Someone who can represent the show around the world” . All hardly surprising when AI has had a surge of viewers from overseas this year, AI related sites have had a surge of members from overseas and Adam is the only contestant to create an international buzz while the competition is still on (already far more than most winners).

“His voice will not translate to radio”
Why are his downloads the most played on radio stations acrosss the US (heck, even Ring of Fire has been played on Country radio stations). Adam’s downloads are even receiving airplay on radio stations outside the US. Unheard of with any previous contestant.

Anyway, make your minds up. Do some people just like seeing him rather than listening to him or is his tongue off putting.

“He sticks his tongue out”
A technique to open the throat and stretch the vocal cords so they are not damaged when reaching high notes. Leona Lewis does the same thing but it is a little less noticeable from certain angles because she lays it flat.

“He sings everything the same way”
Yes, of course, because Mad World was so like Born to Be Wild, Tracks of My Tears was so like Black or White, If I Can’t Have You was so like Play That Funky Music. As for his use of falsetto, he uses it very sparingly. It would just appear that many people do not know the difference between a head voice and falsetto.

"He is not getting any better"
Not only does Adam raise the bar each time you think he couldn't possibly, are people trying to say that because you are head and shoulders above the other contestants and maintain that exceptional standard throughout, you don’t deserve to win because other contestants have improved a little? Even though they haven’t reached a million miles from the same standard and don’t have a prayer of doing so in the next three weeks? This isn’t an end of year musical evening. There are no prizes for “Most Improved”.

“He’s arrogant”
Please explain to me how being constantly grateful for good critique, receptive of bad critique without retaliation or sulking, being humble, courteous, polite and respectful. Heck, he’s about as arrogant as that other gargantuan of the talent show genre that is Leona Lewis. If that is the definition, I wish there were more “arrogant” people around.

“He is pimped”
Pimping by its very definition is unjustified over-praising. Honest critique of the superiority that the judges are seeing and hearing is not pimping.

I find it hilarious that he ends up in the bottom two on a week when Randy uses two predictable words to describe his performance, Kara uses an outrageously poor choice of word to describe it and Simon makes a non-specific commentary and people say he ended up in the bottom two because he is pimped and people are tired of the pimping.

“He’s too experienced”
Allison has already won a TV talent show from which she got a recording contract and was dropped. Kris has had an album out, as have Matt and Scott. Danny has even been nominated at Christian music awards. Anoop has long been a singer in an a capella group. Megan had a recording contract. Several contestants in previous years have had recording contracts. Anyone who believes that any of the finalists in these shows are complete novices has not been paying attention for the past eight years.

AI has had some great contestants in the past, not all of them have won. Never in the history of AI has a contestant been so markedly better than the rest. Indeed, as good as and better than some already eztablished artists. Never in the history of AI has every corner of the media virtually proclaimed a contestant the winner within weeks of the contest starting and persisted with this. Is it any wonder that his fans have got complacent and may have thought enough other people would be voting for him? All it takes is for enough people to think that at the same time and disaster looms.

Added to this, a lot of Adam's supporters have been voting for their second favourite/s and for the contestant/s who they would like to see in the final with Adam, more than they have been voting for Adam and some admitting that they didn't vote for Adam at all this week in the belief that he would be safe and others needed the votes more.

I think too much emphasis is put by some of the significance as the vote goes up of where losing contestants' votes go. For one thing, the votes usually go nowhere. Most fans of departed contestants just stop voting and those who continue to do so make very little difference to the outcome. As an example, the vote was 47m this week. Are you suggesting that the votes of two contestants who were consistently in the bottom two when the total votes were 36m (Anoop and Lil) are going to make the blindest bit of difference in a rise on 11m? Unless you are suggesting that Anoop and Lil’s fans suddenly mustered up the passion to vote for other contestants more than they did for their favourites.

All that said, I believe Adam was in the bottom two. There was no conspiracy and it was not rigged. For those asking who regulates the figures, Price Waterhouse Coopers do and they adjudicate them tightly. There are legalities that the show has to abide by.

We will see how this week pans out.

Anyone Else Thinking "Idol" Is Rigged?

I don't want to be that guy -- a conspiracy theorist running around town in his underwear, wearing a tinfoil hat, screaming about nanobytes the government places under our skin to keep track of us 24/7. But ... does anyone else get the sneaking suspicion that "American Idol" is playing games with our hearts and votes? Please allow me to explain.

Last night, Ryan Seacrest placed two groups of people on either side of the stage -- Kris Allen and Matt Giraud in one, Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey in the other -- leaving Adam Lambert to choose which team he belonged to. He selected Danny and Allison "based only on last night." This is noteworthy for two reasons.

1. No other contestant in "Idol" history that's been placed in this mean "Sophie's Choice" situation has ever actually chosen a side. Some refuse, others sit down in the middle -- but they all play nicey.

2. Not only did the glamazon choose wrong, but what I can't figure out what factors he was deciding on. Did Adam believe he was in the bottom three, so he selected the worst two, or did he think there would only be a bottom two this week? Either way, Adam was in danger of elimination for the first time this season and it left a funny taste in my mouth.

The part of me that's always believed "Idol" finagles certain situations to their (ratings) advantage thinks that Adam was strategically put in the bottom two -- Kris was sent back to safety -- to boost votes for him in weeks to come. It's no secret that narrowly avoiding elimination one week tends to keep you alive another week.

Fun fact: Michael Sarver is the only "Idol" this season to be sent home the week after first landing in the bottom three and let's face it, he shouldn't have been Top 13 anyway.

I also don't think it's a secret that "Idol" prefers its winners to cover the musical spectrum: Kelly Clarkson, pop. Ruben Studdard, soul. Fantasia Barrino, R&B. Carrie Underwood, country. Taylor Hicks, old people music. Jordin Sparks, tween pop. David Cook, rock. And the franchise doesn't have an over-the-top, male version of Christina Aguilera (think about that) who reminds us the value of a lavish stage show.

Do I think Adam Lambert is the most talented singer left? Definitely. Do I want Adam Lambert to win? 100 percent. Do I think he genuinely received the second lowest number of votes this week? No way.
